ABOUT THE PROJECT

SAFER BEHIND THE WHEEL project aims to:

– improve the skills, knowledge base and level of civic engagement of youth workers on the topic of road safety and prevention of driving under influence;

– empower and support the inclusion of physically impaired survivors of car accidents by training them as youth workers and influencers;

– raise the awareness and support the adoption of safer driving practices among the group of young drivers or learners, thus increasing their own level of responsibility and civic engagement.

Our goal is to direct young people’s attention to an extremely important problem, directly resulting into a very large number of accidents – driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. In recent years, there has been a drastic increase in the number of accidents caused by drunk and drugged drivers, most of them young people. We believe that the more a problem is talked about, the more recognizable it becomes.

INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO: ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE and CAR CRASH SURVIVORS EMPOWERMENT

SAFER is innovative in its complex approach to several problems.

The first problem being the extremely high rate of car accidents with young drivers due to alcohol and drugs abuse. SAFER plans to use pantomime for presenting traffic related stories or theatre of the oppressed for presenting and discussing such stories; verbatim theatre, as a safe form of documentary theatre too, to present personal stories, which might be shattering to be directly shared.

The second problem being the social exclusion, which
survivors of car accidents usually find themselves due to their physical impairments or long term psychological distress. Survivors of car accidents are going to be empowered to undertake further responsibility and civic engagement by sharing their stories and participating in visits to high-schools, driving schools, universities, taking up protagonists’ roles and actively participating in all simulations

Targeting young people through the project

SAFER is specifically focused on young people as a group which requires a lot of specially tailored efforts and support in order to build a responsible attitude towards driving, considering the implications, which the opposite leads to.

Coming of age and being granted certain rights does not automatically mean that all the decisions taken, all the judgements made and all the actions implemented from that moment on are the safest or the most reasonable one. Driving is one of the spheres where wrong judgements can be lethal, while at the same time youth is the time when habits can be built for life.
