As a part of the SAFER project, we visited the following secondary schools in April: The Secondary School of Nursing Slovenj Gradec, Gimnazija Slovenj Gradec (general secondary school), Gimnazija Jesenice (general secondary school).
The workshops at the secondary school begins with a powerful personal story shared by an individual who was injured in a traffic accident. Through an honest and heartfelt account, they describe their life before the accident, what happened, and how they live today. The story emphasizes the importance of traffic safety and encourages students to ask questions and engage in conversation.
Following the presentation, we discuss with the students why young people might choose to consume alcohol and explore healthy and fun alternatives for spending free time without involving alcohol. We also debunk common myths about alcohol and work together to determine whether they are true or not.
Students are introduced to the concept of crash weight. They weigh themselves and calculate what their crash weight would be in a collision at 30, 50, and 90 km/h, offering a clear illustration of the impact of speed in traffic situations.
The workshop also includes hands-on activities—participants measure their reaction time and learn about the importance of quick reflexes in traffic. One of the more engaging exercises is the distraction game, which provides a practical demonstration of how various distractions can affect concentration and the ability to safely participate in traffic.
What participants remembered the most was the life story they heard, the interactive activities, and the fun lecture. They also found the “drunk goggles” experiment particularly interesting.
